What is it that creeps us out about spiders? Could it be their color? Their eyes? Their speed?

Or do our brains sensationalize the creepiness and possible destruction they might inflict on us?

In an article by Tamara Cohen for The Daily Mail, she wrote: Psychology Professor Jon May said their angular shaped legs, dark colours and the fact they move unpredictably are all things we are hard-wired to fear.

Let’s be honest, for many of us finding a spider crawling on you while watching TV or sleeping would make your heart beat a thousand times a second.

But did you know that spiders are beneficial insects? They rid us of ants, flies, and cockroaches. They help the environment by cleaning up pesky insects.

Are spiders poisonous? To an extent yes.

All spiders are poisonous; however, it is rare that a spider can poison us. Why? Well, because their fangs are weak and generally cannot puncture our skin.

Now, there are spiders out there that can wreak havoc: The Black Widow spider and the Brown Recluse spider.

The female Black Widow spider is between .5 inch to 1.5 inches long. They’re much bigger than the male Black Widow. Female Black Widow spiders have the infamous red “hourglass” marking underneath their abdomen.  And yes, the female Black Widow spider is the most venomous spider in North America.

These spiders are found around plants, under rocks and in storage areas that are seldom inspected.

The Brown Recluse spider aka The Fiddle Back spider is smaller than their counterpart. About .75 inches long.

Its name speaks for itself. They’re brown and quite reclusive. They love to hide and not be seen. They can hide in a shoe, under a bed, in a drawer, etc. They have a “fiddle-shape” design on its back directly behind its head.

Their bite is pretty nasty. They carry a necrotoxic venom that is capable of causing necrotic lesions.

What about tarantulas? Believe it or not, they have small poison glands. The worst they can do to you is to try to bite you. Their bite is equivalent to a bee sting.

So although spiders can scare the pants off people, they’re naturally an ant, fly, and cockroach killing machine.
